The Omineca Bear Human Conflict Committee (OBHCC) formed in 1998 as a program of the Spruce City Wildlife Association. The OBHCC representatives include Regional Conservation Officer Services, the City of Prince George, Solid Waste, Parks, and Environmental Services Departments, Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, University of BC, BC Conservation Foundation, biologists, educators, and others. They developed the Northern Bear Awareness Program in 2000 with a commitment to addressing causes and solutions relating to bear-human conflicts, and the high number of bears destroyed in the city of Prince George. Through the Northern Bear Awareness Program the committee works to increase public awareness by promoting conservation with a focus on:
· Preventative Education · Fostering a pragmatic understanding, appreciation and tolerance of bears · Bear proofing the community of Prince George by minimizing unnatural attractants. · Conducting research on bear habitat and behaviour in a community environment · Promoting community involvement.
The OBHCC continues to meet as a combination of the Northern Bear Awareness Society, The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George and the City of Prince George. |
